This movie is Dope! Literally. An american high-school senior named Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) bond over ’90s hip-hop culture, their studies and playing music in their own punk band.
A chance encounter with a drug dealer named Dom lands Malcolm and company at the dealer’s nightclub birthday party; when the scene turns violent, they flee — with the Ecstasy that Dom secretly hid in Malcolm’s backpack. A wild adventure ensues as the youths try to evade armed thugs who want the stash.
It starts as a classic teen movie, with the boys(and girl!) having their life focus changing every single second, from their punk music, to Malcolm’s ambition to go to Harvard, to the girls in school, the paranoid sneaker bully’s…and then slowly the movie starts to mature as they move to the streets, get involved with gangs and nearly with cops, but all the time they are struggling to retain their innocence, though with every single incidence they start realizing that life is all about hard choices, and sometimes making the right choice means staying alive.
This is a must watch for the young and 90’s at heart. Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
Arguably the best African american comedy movie of 2015.
